Instructions

How to complete this repair

Useful tools
  • Bright flashlight
  • Soft dry brush or clean cloth
  • Coin for the filter-B cover lock
  • Scissors or a seam ripper for wrapped fibers
  • Protective gloves for sharp debris
Before you begin
  • Turn the vacuum off, unplug it by holding the plug, and allow it to cool before removing the bin, hose, cleaner head, brush bar, filters, or airway covers.
  • Be careful of sharp objects when checking the hose and airways. Do not use a rigid sharp tool that could puncture the hose or damage a seal.
  • Filter A and filter B must be completely dry for at least 24 hours after washing before they are reinstalled.
  • Do not open the motor, switch housing, cord termination, or other mains-voltage assemblies.
  1. Identify whether suction is weak at the wand or cleaner head

The Ball Animal 3 routes suction to the wand when the handle is locked upright and to the Motorbar cleaner head when the machine is reclined. Before taking it apart, note whether pickup is weak through the hose and wand, through the cleaner head, or through both paths. Turn the machine off and unplug it after this brief comparison.

Skip the powered comparison if the vacuum is overheating, smells burnt, sparks, has a damaged cord, or makes an abnormal mechanical noise.

  2. Empty and inspect the bin

Press the button on the bin handle and remove the bin. Empty it before debris reaches the MAX line; Dyson notes that operating above MAX can reduce performance and require more frequent filter washing. Confirm that the bin base closes fully, the bin seats securely on the body, and no debris is packed into the cyclone inlet or bin connection.

  3. Check the wand and removable hose

Open the handle cap and pull the wand and hose upward. Press the button at the end of the hose to remove the wand, then look through the wand. With the bin removed, press the tab at the base of the hose and detach the hose from the machine. Inspect the full hose for compacted debris, checking bends and both cuffs carefully.

  4. Remove the Motorbar head and inspect its airway

Lay the unplugged vacuum on its back. Press the red cleaner-head release on the bottom of the ball and slide the Motorbar head down and off the machine. Look through the cleaner-head airway and the airway at the front of the ball. Remove accessible debris without forcing a tool through a bend.

  5. Check the body inspection panel and remaining airways

With the bin and cleaner head removed, locate the clear inspection panel at the bottom of the bin recess and lift it to one side. Check the visible body airway and the cuff above the ball. Reclose the inspection panel completely after all debris is removed so it cannot create an air leak.

  6. Inspect the Motorbar brush bar for restricted pickup

Press the release on the back of the removed Motorbar head and rotate the end cap upward 90 degrees. Pull out the brush bar and remove hair, thread, and fibers from the bar and its ends. A stalled or heavily wrapped brush can leave dirt behind even when the vacuum motor still produces airflow. The Ball Animal 3 brush bar is not washable.

  7. Inspect and wash filter A and filter B when needed

Filter A is beneath the handle in the cyclone assembly. Filter B is inside the ball behind the side cover and locking dial. Dyson specifies washing both at least monthly using cold water only. Continue rinsing until the water runs clear, remove excess water, and leave both filters in a warm, well-ventilated place for at least 24 hours. Do not continue to the test step until both are completely dry.

  8. Reassemble and select the correct suction-control position

Refit filter B and lock its ball cover, reinstall filter A and the bin, reconnect the hose and wand, lock the Motorbar brush bar and end cap, and click the cleaner head back onto the ball. Set the cleaner-head slider left for deep- to medium-pile carpet and delicate rugs, center for low-pile carpet and large debris, or right for hard floors and ground-in dirt.

  9. Make a controlled pickup test

Test the wand path and cleaner-head path again. If suction returns at one path but not the other, recheck that path's removable assembly and connections. If both remain weak after the bin, filters, hose, wand, head, and body airways are confirmed clear and sealed, stop testing and book professional airflow and motor inspection.
